Armed Forces say thank you for town?s respect
The Armed Forces laid on a flypast and parade to say thank you to the people
of the Wiltshire market town Wootton Bassett for honouring fallen Service
personnel. Since April 2007 they have lined the streets more than 100 times
as funeral cortèges have driven solemnly from nearby RAF Lyneham, where the
bodies of Servicemen and women are repatriated from Afghanistan or Iraq.
General Sir Richard Dannatt, Chief of the General Staff, wrote in a letter:
?It is the things that cost nothing that are the most important ? a friendly
greeting in the street, a prayer in church. But the gestures shown by the
people of Wootton Bassett surpass these at every level.?

Conker conquerer enlisted some devious science
A mechanic from Northamptonshire has used his scientific knowledge to beat 600
contestants to the title of world conker champion. Ray Kellock, 62, of
Rushden, devised his ?kinetic energy theory? at the 44th World Conker
Championships in his home county yesterday. In the first round he tried to
hit his opponent?s conker as hard as possible, but noticed that he was
causing more damage to his own. Mr Kellock, who runs a minibus company,
said: ?I decided to let the opponent whale away and then make sure I hit
their conker every time but not too hard. It seemed to work.?
