ImageAs Chawton is a conservation area and is also within the south downs national park, there are additional constraints on development within the village. These rules  affects any development, including the installation of satellite dishes which need planning permission prior to their installation. This article lists the rules that govern their installation.

Clarification of the rules governing the installation of satellite dishes has been obtained from EHDC and is shown below

Satellite dishes on dwellinghouses are permitted development in most cases by virtue of Class H of Part 1 of Schedule 2 of the T&C Planning (General Permitted Development) Order 1995. Only one on any dwelling is permitted.

If it is fixed to a roof it should be no higher than the roof and if it is fixed to a chimney it should be no higher than the chimney. The maximum size is 45cm if on a chimney and 70cm in any other case.

Satellite dishes are permitted development in Conservation Areas but there are additional controls. In a Conservation Area they must not be:

      • on a chimney
      • on a building which exceeds 15m in height
      • on a wall or roof slope which fronts a highway

These additional controls in Conservation Areas should ensure in most cases that the dishes are below the roof line and on the rear of the building.

We were advised that the definition of a "highway" includes main roads and the main thoroughfare within developments.

Planning permission is required, to obtain consent to install in the manner defined above. Relevant forms are organised via East Hampshire District Council in Petersfield. Contact details are listed in the "contacts" part of this site.

A couple of central government generic guides are also available within the Housing Links section of this site. These provide the UK wide rules on the placement of antennas, but please note that these do not list the additional constraints that exist on the Chawton conservation area, as listed above.
