A nostangic exhibition of four past events of importance in the village, staged by Anne Mallinson at Chawton village hall
Admission free, but a modest donation on leaving the hall if you have enjoyed your visit would help towards the cost of staging this unique display of items which is is hoped may be preserved for posterity thereafter.
The four events are:
1967 : Chawton commemorates Jane Austen - The 150th Anniversary of her death. - The 5 day event which hit the headlines
1973 : The centenary of the parish church of St Nicholas, Chawton - Re-opened in July 1872, having been rebuilt aftera disastrous fire in 1871
1973 : The ancient custom of "beating the bounds of the parish" - Revived
1975 : Jane Austen bi-centenary festival, Chawton Celebrating the 200th anniversary of her birth - Village pride and pageantry.
Various small items will be available for sale, including a booklet account of the 1967 commerations of Jane Austen, a print of a portrait of Jane Austen, philatelic items, etc.
